Cuillin Ridge Traverse
The Cuillin Ridge Traverse on the Isle of Skye is arguably the finest and most rewarding mountaineering adventure in the British Isles. The ridge runs for nearly 8 miles and involves over 10,000 feet of ascent, much of it involving scrambling with some sections of rock climbing and abseiling. Though technicalities are never more than very difficult in standard, it is the sustained and exposed nature of the terrain that provides the challenge. Prior knowledge of the ridge, thorough preparation and a determined approach are all key factors in a successful traverse.
Snowdonia Climbing offers a 5-day guided programme which has flexibility built-in, this offers a high chance of a successful traverse of the ridge. The 5 days include 2 days spent preparing/acclimatising on key sections and making a stash of equipment that will be used at the bivvy site. This is followed by a 2-day South to North (lightweight) traverse with an overnight bivvy midway. An extra day is kept in hand to allow further flexibility and to maximise the chances of success given the vagaries of the weather. To date we have a 100% success rate for Cuillin Ridge Traverses.
The traverse is a significant undertaking suitable only for those with a good level of fitness. Traverse aspirants must be comfortable with exposure and have previous scrambling experience. The package is inclusive of guiding, 3rd Party Liability Insurance and loan of technical / bivvy equipment (less sleeping bag and rollmat) for the 2-day traverse. Cost per person with a guiding ratio of 1:2 is £575.
A successful and safe traverse of the ridge is very much dependent on the weather and rock conditions. Should a traverse attempt be forcluded for such reasons, single day trips onto the ridge will be conducted throughout the 5-day package.
